Chapter 40 Kerwin’s Best Friend

The next morning, Betty and Kerwin were having breakfast in the dining room. Looking at her.

Kerwin suddenly asked, “How was your sleep last night?”

“Not bad.” Betty looked up. “Why are you asking me that?”

“I was afraid you’d be scared and not sleep well if I was around.” Kerwin took a sip of coffee and looked calm. “I can move into the guest room if you want.”

Betty froze for a moment before realizing Kerwin was referring to the other night and blushed. She said, “We’re a couple, so it’s okay that we live together.”

Kerwin looked at Betty. “Don’t you blame me for what I did to you that night?”

He still remembered how uncomfortable he was to see Betty’s fear and resistance when he approached her that night.

Betty looked at Kerwin with some embarrassment. “Nope. You did it for a reason too.”

“A reason?” said Kerwin, suddenly raising an eyebrow. “What reason?” This content provided by N(o)velDrama].[Org.

“Huh?” Betty didn’t expect Kerwin to ask her that and felt embarrassed. Under Kerwin’s gaze, she said stiffly, “Because I humiliated you the other night and mentioned Jeffrey, it was normal for you to be mad. After all, I am your wife.”

Kerwin’s eyebrows raised even higher.

Although Betty’s words were subtle, he figured it out.

Betty thought that he did that to her that night because he was possessive.

Kerwin suddenly couldn’t help but chuckle.

Betty thought she had said something wrong, so she asked, embarrassed, “What’s wrong? What’s so funny?”

Looking at Betty, Kerwin began to ponder.

He had never been one who liked to deny. His earlier concern for Betty and his jealousy after learning about Jeffrey made him realize that he seemed to have feelings for her.

He thought he would have stopped being attracted to anyone long ago after all these years, but he didn’t expect the one to come along. Fortunately, the one was his wife.

Unfortunately, she seemed to be a little slow and unaware of it.

Should I just tell her how I feel and make her mine? Or should I take my time and steal her heart?

Kerwin smiled bitterly in his heart.

It had been too long since he had been this attached to a woman. At this moment, he felt that it was more difficult to show Betty his feelings than to deal with those millions of dollars of business.

Therefore, he decided to take his time.

Looking at Betty, Kerwin smiled and said, “If you say so.”

..

Betty did not understand the meaning of Kerwin’s words, so she could only nod her head.

Kerwin looked at her dumbfounded look as he smiled and whispered, “It’s Saturday tomorrow; are you free? A friend of mine is coming over for dinner.”

“A friend?” Betty was stunned.

“Yeah.” Kerwin looked down. “What? You don’t want to see my family, but you can see my friends,

right?”

Betty gave an awkward smile. “Stop it. I’m free tomorrow.”

The next day, Betty and Maria worked in the kitchen all morning. At noon, the guest finally arrived.

The guest said in an aggressive tone, “Gee! Kerwin, your room looks more lively since you got married.”

His voice came in before he showed up.

Betty hurried to the living room and then saw a man in a pink shirt walking in.

The man looked handsome and was about Betty’s age, but he seemed to be aggressive and was not as reserved as Kerwin.

“Sup, Mrs. Martin…” As soon as he saw Betty, he walked toward her and glared at Kerwin in his wheelchair. “Kerwin, you didn’t even tell me your wife was that gorgeous.”

Kerwin looked calm. He ignored him and said, “This is Betty, and this is Jason.”

Jason?

As a reporter, she thought the name sounded familiar. After thinking about it for a while, she snapped to her senses. “Gee! Are you the Jason from the Thomas family?”

There were three influential families in Chicago.

Among them, the Martin family, which was the leader, had the largest property. Secondly, there was the Thomas family, which was very prestigious in show business. Thirdly, there was the Baker family, which had been slowly declining over the past few years.

Jason was the only son and heir of the Thomas family.

“Hello.” Betty was a little nervous but smiling. “I’m Betty.”

“I’ve heard a lot about you.” Jason had charming eyes. When he took Betty’s hand, he wanted to put

her hand to his lips for a kiss.

At that moment, Kerwin suddenly raised his hand and grabbed Betty’s hand.

“Don’t touch her,” Kerwin said, deadpan.

Jason froze, and then his eyes lit up.

Gee, was Kerwin jealous? That seems so interesting.

Jason flashed a grin and suddenly leaned in close to Betty, then he said, “Mrs. Martin, I’m telling you Kerwin is not romantic. If you are lonely and bored, come to me then. I’m much funnier than he is.”

Betty shivered and forced a smile. “Mr. Thomas, you are so funny.”

At this point, Kerwin’s face darkened as he took Betty’s hand and headed to the dining room.

Maria and James prepared the meal and then went back home because of a family matter. Betty, Kerwin, and Jason were left alone in the villa.

Jason crossed his legs and said in a mischievous tone, “Well, there’s no wine. Kerwin, go fetch one. Gee, no one else is here. Why are you still sitting in that wheelchair?”

Upon hearing his words, Betty froze. Then she saw Kerwin get up from the wheelchair, serve a bowl of soup, and hand it to Betty. He said, “Drink some soup.”

Then Kerwin turned around and walked toward the wine cellar.

Betty then realized that Jason and Kerwin were so close that he knew Kerwin was not disabled.

Jason watched Kerwin leave, put away his smile, and turned to look at Betty.

“Mrs. Martin, thank you.”

Betty was a little uncomfortable with his sudden serious attitude. “What was that about?”

“Thank you for marrying Kerwin,” Jason said, leaning back in his chair and grinning. “You’re the second person to know that Kerwin doesn’t have a disability. That proves he trusts you.”

Thinking of Kerwin suddenly standing up that night, Betty blushed but smiled as she said, “AS a

married couple, we’re supposed to trust each other.”

Jason’s eyes lit up for a moment, then he spoke, “Mrs. Martin, did Kerwin ever tell you why he was pretending to be disabled?”.

Chapter 41 The Reason He Pretended to Be Disabled

Betty froze and shook her head.

Kerwin had said she might be better off not knowing some issues, so she didn’t go further to

question him.

“Ten years ago, Kerwin was in a car accident.” Jason was blunt. “Everyone thought Kerwin’s leg was crippled in that accident, but he was just injured. His injuries were healed after he went to France.”

Betty recalled how she also seemed to have seen Kerwin’s car accident on the news.

At the time, Kerwin was barely 20 years old and had just started college. When he was kidnapped, the kidnapper offered an enormous ransom of 100 million dollars. The news was a local sensation.

It was said that the kidnapper tried to take Kerwin away as a hostage after receiving the ransom, but he was in a car accident on the road. The kidnapper was killed instantly, while Kerwin was seriously injured.

However, many details were not made public at the time, so people did not know that Kerwin was

injured in both legs and only knew that he had been weak and sick since he went to America for

treatment.

“I’ve probably heard something about it,” Betty said. “So he continued to pretend to be disabled after he was treated in America?”

“But.” Jason tilted his head. “Mrs. Martin, guess why?”

Betty found him to be funny.

Jason and Kerwin had completely different personalities. A person like Jason may be very popular

with girls.

“You want me to guess?” Betty pretended to think seriously. “Is he doing it to get the Martin family to let down their guards against him?”

Betty thought about why Kerwin was pretending to be disabled before, so she had her guess in her mind long ago.

As a journalist, although she did not know much about the inner affairs of powerful families, she could probably guess that the reason that Kerwin had tried so hard to hide the truth had something to do with his family.

She had never met Kerwin’s elder brother, Jeffrey’s father, Henry, who was rumored to be a very ambitious and ruthless man. Since Bruce was old, Henry was mainly responsible for managing the Martin family business.

Kerwin cut ties with the Martin family and started his own business from scratch, so he could avoid

conflict with Henry.

Could it be that Kerwin is pretending to be a cripple because of his elder brother?

Jason gave Betty an approving look after hearing her speculation. “Well done. You’re pretty smart.”

Betty chuckled, embarrassed. “I’ve seen a lot of family dramas in TV series about rich families.”

Jason burst into laughter. “Because the Martin family owns a large family business, the relationship between the family members is as complicated as what you have seen in those TV series. Although Kerwin seems to be arrogant, he’s had a hard time over the years.”

Betty was stunned but nodded.

Kerwin was healthy but in a wheelchair for the past ten years. And he had to defend himself from his family, so he must be very tired.

“So,” Jason spoke again, suddenly withdrawing his smile and looking serious. “Mrs. Martin, you must make him happy.”

Betty didn’t expect Jason to say something like this and then froze.

av SO

However, what kind of happiness could she bring to him?

Before Betty could answer his question, she suddenly heard a steady footstep and a cold voice. “What are you talking about?”

Betty turned her head and saw that it was Kerwin who had returned.

Kerwin was lanky. He was wearing a light blue shirt to show his perfect body shape.

Was WE

Betty’s eyes darkened.

How does it feel to be confined to a wheelchair for a man as brilliant as him?

“I was telling your wife that I fell in love with her at first sight. And I’m about to steal her.” The moment Jason saw Kerwin, he put on a naughty smile. “Kerwin, you know how charming I am. A lot of women admire me, so you’d better watch out.”

“Stop making such a comparison!” Kerwin said as he walked over to the table. Then he unscrewed the red wine in his hand with a corkscrew. “You are way out of her league.”

“Gee, you’re so confident,” Jason grunted.

During the dinner with Jake, Betty found him to be hilarious. And Jake didn’t wipe his mouth and got up until he finished the last dessert.

“Mrs. Martin, I have a date later. I’ll leave you two alone. And I’ll see you next time.”

Betty and Kerwin sent Jason away. They watched Jason drive away his red sports car and then went back to the dining room.

Kerwin was taking the plates back to the kitchen.

“I got it,” Betty said immediately and tried to take over the plates, but he stopped her.

“I could still wash some dishes,” Kerwin whispered.

Betty had no choice but to wash the dishes with him.

After putting the dishes in the dishwasher, Kerwin said, “What did Jason say to you?”

Betty froze for a moment and was going to tell him the truth. “He told me the reason why you

pretended to be a cripple.”

“Alright.” Kerwin wasn’t surprised.

Jason and Kerwin had been friends for years, so Kerwin could guess what Jason had told her.

“Do you blame me?” Kerwin raised his eyes to stare at Betty.

Betty froze and didn’t respond. “Blame you for what?”

“I should have told you earlier.” Kerwin put the last plate into the sink.

Betty chuckled. “It makes no difference. Jason wouldn’t have dared tell me without your permission, would he?”

Kerwin couldn’t help but glance at Betty.

Although Betty was not talkative, she figured it all in her heart.

Kerwin led Betty out of the kitchen. “Jason is more eloquent than I am.”

It meant that Jason might be able to tell the story more clearly than he did.

“As for the details…” Kerwin hesitated and added, “I still can’t tell you. And it will put you in danger. I hope you’ll understand.”

Betty nodded. “I know you’re trying to protect me.”

Betty’s tender words reassured Kerwin. And he could not help but squeeze her hands tighter.

Then, Betty blushed. When she was about to say something, she heard her cell phone ringing in the living room.

“Well, I have to take a call.” She lowered her head, pulled her hands back, and walked to the living

room.

Betty picked up the phone on the coffee table and looked at the caller ID, which made her frown.

She said, deadpan, “Emily, why are you calling me?”
