Chapter 141
The next day, after getting back from North Ridge Mountain, Lillian headed straight to Emily's place to let off some steam.
"Grandma, I swear, Allison just can't stand me. I don't even know why. That whole mess at the stables was just a mix-up, and I did apologize afterward, but she still won't let it go."
Sitting on the sofa next to Emily, Lillian's eyes were red and puffy from crying, her voice thick with emotion. "She's got this weird beef with me, and I can't figure out why she's always on my case."
Seeing her granddaughter so upset, Emily felt bad too. She squeezed Lillian's hand. "Sweetheart, tell me what that girl has been doing to you."
Lillian sniffled, her voice trembling with hurt. "I think she feels like I'm stealing Joshua's attention, so she's always pushing me out. Like, when we were chilling at the base camp, I made some stew for Joshua, but Allison swiped it and ate it herself, saying my cooking was awful."
Emily frowned, "Did she really do that?"
"It gets worse, Grandma," Lillian said, sounding all kinds of miserable. "I was exhausted and asked Joshua to carry my backpack, but she wouldn't have it. She said she's his girlfriend, so only her bag gets carried. Seriously, Grandma, I've known Joshua forever. Can't he carry my bag without it being a big deal?"
Emily's frown deepened. She was clearly not pleased. "She is something else. She's already acting like she's in charge and she's not even family yet."
"Exactly! And when we were crossing the river, she wouldn't let Joshua help me. I almost fell in!"
Emily gasped, holding Lillian's hand tighter. "Allison is terrible! Lillian, did you get hurt?"
Lillian nodded, "I did."
She pulled up her skirt a bit to show a wound on her ankle. The scrape had mostly healed overnight, but Lillian had deliberately made it worse to get some sympathy from her grandmother.
The wound looked raw and slightly bloody. Lillian had left it untreated to show it off to Emily and tug at her heartstrings.
And it worked like a charm.
Emily was all concern, immediately calling for the housekeeper to clean and bandage Lillian's injury.
"Last night, I hurt my foot and
couldn't walk, I asked Joshua to carry me to the viewpoint to watch the meteor shower, but Allison wouldn't let him. She even said, she even said..." Before she could finish, Liffian burst into tears.
Already fuming, Emily's voice turned stern. "What else did she say?"
"She said I'm an adult now andnoveldrama

should keep my distance from Joshua to avoid gossip. She bragged to her friends about soon marrying Joshua. She said she's
Joshua's wife, so he can only carry her.
Lillian cried bitterly, "Grandma, should I really keep my distance from Joshua? Is it wrong to ask him to carry me when I'm hurt?"
"Ridiculous!" Emily was livid. "She's not even part of the family yet and she's already acting like she owns the place!"
"Please, Grandma, you've got to back me up!"
"Don't worry, Lillian. I'm on your side. At the next family gathering, I'll make sure to set that Owens girl straight!"
The Fisher family gathering day rolled around quickly.
Joshua picked up Allison to bring her to the Fisher household. As soon as they stepped in, Emily found a reason to send Joshua off on an errand.
Allison settled into the living room with Emily and Rose.
Lillian sat next to Emily, dressed to the nines for the occasion. She wore light makeup and an ivory silk gown, looking every bit the picture of elegance-just how Emily liked it.
