Chapter 67
Chapter 67 Not Sharpest Knife In The Drawer
Morton shot his daughter a fulminating look before turning to Darya. 'If it's not money you want, name a price,
any price.'
Darya crossed her legs and smiled. 'I know you've been getting in on years, but I
didn't know you were
suffering from hearing problems.'
'What did you say?' Morton's nostrils flared.
Darya pointed to her own ears. 'I said, you might consider booking an
appointment with an otolaryngologist. I happen to know someone who specialises
in that area. I could give you his contact number if you want.'
Felicia looked blankly at her father. 'What's she talking about?'
Morton stared at his daughter, incredulous.
He had always known she wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, but he couldn't believe she was so dense as
not to understand such an obvious insult.
The Darya woman was calling him old and deaf-how could Felicia not get it?
Feeling his pulse quicken, Morton took several deep breaths and forced himself to calm down.
He touched the inside pocket of his suit jacket and felt the reassuring presence of his high blood pressure pills.
Felicia took her father's deeply flushed face and heaving breathing as signs of rising anger.
She wasn't wrong, but she didn't realise that the anger was directed at her, not Darya.
She decided to confront her nemesis. 'You set me up that night. The games were rigged. You tricked me into losing all that money. And the ring."
Darya didn't even spare her a glance. 'Sue me if you have evidence. If you don't, shut up.'
Felicia's chest heaved. 'How dare you tell me to shut up! If you don't give back the ring, I'm going to make you
'Shut up!'
This time, the order came from Felicia's father.
Felicia flinched as if she was slapped, but she kept quiet.
Morton rose to his feet, circled the desk and stood in front of Darya. 'I know you are paying us back for the way we treated you in the past three years. I can
understand that. I'm willing to let Felicia apologise to you, as long

'Dad! Felicia protested. 'I'm not apologising to her!"
Morton rounded on his daughter. 'I told you to shut up!'
Felicia pouted in silence.
Morton continued, 'I'm willing to let Felicia apologise to you, and I'll offer you compensation of a reasonable amount, as long as you return the jade ring. Then we'll let bygones be bygotes and stay out of each other's way. What do you say to that?"
Darya pretended to give it some thought. 'Thanks, but no thanks.'
Morton took a deep breath to suppress his impatience. 'Maybe you should take some time to-'
'I don't need to take time to think about it,' Darya cut him off. 'I've already said I'm not returning the ring, apology or not..
An apology couldn't erase what happened.
Morton examined Darya's face carefully.
When he saw that her mind was made up, he gave up all pretence of civility. 'Fine. Then I guess I'll just have to get my ring back some other way. If something bad happens or someone gets hurt, don't say I didn't give you
a choice,'
Darya wasn't intimidated by his threat at all.
'I guess I made the wrong move in coming here today,' Morton said. 'I should've gone straight to Avery McAllister. After all, you are nothing without him."noveldrama
Darya spread out both hands. 'Be my guest. Your five minutes are up, by the way.' 'You think Avery's going to protect you because you serve him well in bed?' Morton smiled haughtily. 'What do you think the old Mr McAllister is going to think once he finds out his beloved son is dating a woman like you?'
Darya almost laughed out loud.
Morton still didn't know she was a McAllister.
He was threatening to tell on her to her own father.
Tickled, she said to Morton, 'Go ahead and try, I can give you the old Mr McAllister's number if you don't have
it.'
Morton narrowed his eyes. 'Do you think I'm bluffing?"
Darya shrugged.
Morton took out his phone and dialled a number.
He put it on speakerphone once the call was connected.
"Hello?
"Matthias, it's Morton."
"Ha, it's been a while, old friend. To what do I owe the pleasure?

Morton watched Darya's reaction.
She showed no signs of panic or even the slightest hint of fear.
Maybe she didn't know who Matthias was.
Thinking of this, Morton spoke in a louder voice, 'Mr McAllister, I hear you're away
on a business trip?"
'Where did you hear that?'
'I happen to drop by your office today.'
'Oh? I don't recall we have any business dealings with Zenith.'
Darya hid a smile.
She could tell from her father's voice that he was teasing the old man.
Morton might be an acquaintance or at best a business associate, but definitely not a friend of his father's.
But Morton obviously didn't realise that.
He continued, 'Your son's doing a good job running the company, but sometimes
he still needs guidance from
an old hand like you.'
'What do you mean?' Matthias took a leisurely sip of his coffee.
He was sitting under an umbrella in an outdoor café more than eight thousand kilometres away from Hagen, enjoying some quality alone time.
As he listened to Morton drone on, he wondered what the old man wanted from
him.
'Did you know that he appointed a woman to the role of vice president?' Morton asked.
'Avery might have mentioned it in passing.'
'Maybe he forgot to mention that he was sleeping with her.'
Matthias almost choked on his coffee.
Avery sleeping with Darya?
What kind of nonsense was Morton talking about?
Then Matthias remembered that Darya was going by the surname of Miller.
Morton, the old fool, must still be kept in the dark about Darya's real identity.
In a way, it was understandable.
Darya spent most of her teenage years abroad.
Most people in Hagen knew Matthias had four children-three sons and a
daughter, but very few of them had actually seen Darya's face.
Matthias chuckled to himself.
He looked forward to the day Morton finally discovered the truth.
