Chapter 70 Let's Work Out

A Deal

Silence descended in the private room.noveldrama

Reece Cooke slipped out of the room with the excuse of visiting the restroom.

Micah spoke up, 'I shouldn't have asked Reece to get you here under false pretences. For that, I apologise. It's just that-'

'You seem to be apologising a lot recently.' Darya sneered.

Micah took a deep breath. 'I know. But the ring is very important to my father. I'd like you to reconsider. If it's not money you are looking for, perhaps we can work out a trade.'

Darya's sarcastic tone didn't escape his notice.

Micha knew he had just offended her again, though that wasn't his intention.

He sighed quietly.

He wouldn't have come here if his father hadn't been so insistent.

The jade ring was a priceless family heirloom, Morton claimed.

Initially, Micah refused to get involved.

Felicia was the one who gave the ring away.

She deserved to be taught a lesson.

But Morton grew so agitated, his blood pressure shot through the roof.

Micah had to call an ambulance.

Knowing his father would not let the matter rest until he got the ring back, Micah had to make the trip against his own best judgement.

Darya smiled mockingly.

It was just like Micah to turn everything into a business deal.

To help Regina, he traded his own marriage.

To help his father, he was now proposing another trade.

Darya was curious about what he could offer this time.

On a whim, she asked, 'I can name any condition I want?'

The room fell silent again

Micah gazed at her face, half shrouded in shadows

He had always known she was pretty, but he had always kept his distance in the

past and ever the opportunity to examine her up close

Het nose was petite and slightly turned up at the end, which gave her an adorable book.

Her lips were a healthy rosy colour and didn't need the help of lipsticks

Come to think of it, Darya seldom wore makeup.

When she was lost in thought, she tended to knit her brows and tap her fingers unconsciously

When her eyes lit up, Micah knew she must have come up with an idea that pleased her.

He sat back in his chair and relaxed, waiting for her reply.

He couldn't remember the last time the two of them had such a quiet, peaceful moment together

Her assistant, Glen Chasey, was still in the room, but Micah ignored him.

Darya Miller was an enigma, Micah thought.

She appeared in his life without notice, schemed her way into his house, then spent three years playing the role of his wife.

He tolerated her existence because she could help Regina.

Unlike Darya, who was always full of energy and ready to move, Regina was fragile and delicate.

It surprised Micah to realise that he hadn't thought of Regina for a long time. Absently, he wondered how she was doing

Regina was like an orchid flower, which couldn't survive without the right environment, the precise amount of water and nutrition as well as the exact level of humidity.

In contrast, Darya was...

Micah tried to think of a flower that was both hardy and vigorous.

After Darya left him, his interest in her seemed to grow by the day.

Where did she come from?

Where did she learn how to dance, how to fight?

Unlike his father, Micah refused to believe that Avery McAllister appointed Darya

as the vice president purely because she was his girlfriend.

As a matter of fact, Micah doubted if the two of them were actually going out.

Avery, just like Micah, was a businessman who separated work from please.

He must have seen something in Darya that Micah missed.

'I've decided on my condition,' Darya announced.

Micah sat straighter. 'Go ahead."

'Are you sure I can name any condition I want?'

'I'll do my best to meet that condition. Micah nodded. 'If not, we can always

renegotiate."

Maybe Felicia losing the ring was a good thing, Micah suddenly realised.

At least it gave him an excuse to talk to Darya again.

'Do you have the hospital records of my blood transfusions?' Darya asked.

Micah was momentarily lost. 'Um, sure.'

'So you know how much blood I've lost.'

Micah nodded.

He had a feeling that he wouldn't like where this conversation was going.

'Then it's easy. You want the ring back? I only have one condition-ask Regina to return the blood.'

'W-what?' Micah stammered.

'An eye for an eye. I'm sure you have heard of that expression before.'

'But I-' Micah was at a loss for words.

What was he supposed to say?

Darya looked right at him.

Micah Cavanaugh was known for more than just his business acumen.

His handsome face was often splashed across the pages of gossip magazines.

But what Darya loved the most about him was his character-his valour, his integrity, his resolution to put his own life on the line for the sake of others, even strangers.

He loved his family, despite their many shortcomings.

He was fair to his employees and led by example.

He donated generously to charities but refused to brag about it.

Darya sighed.

During those three years, the more she knew about him, the more she grew to not

only admire but also

respect him.

However, sometimes you could love someone to death and still not end up

together with him.

Love wasn't just about physical attraction and the surge of hormones.

A fairy tale happy ending depended on so many other variables-friends, relatives,

work, health....

A marriage that lasted for fifty years could still fall apart after something as simple

as 'he forgot to do the

dishes again.'

Darya didn't hate Micah after the divorce.

In fact, she still respected him as a person.

But she didn't think they could ever go back to being husband and wife.
