Love’ss 41
Chapter 41
Elena’s gown arrived. While the style and cut had nothing on Ashley’s designs, it was still a decent number. At least Elena wouldn’t have to worry about sticking out like a sore thumb at Athena’s birthday
celebration.
“How’s the present coming along?” Elena asked Amelia as she tried on the dress. Athena’s birthday celebration not only called for a fine and understated wardrobe but also an equally fine present.Published by Nôv'elD/rama.Org.
Athena would be pampered with extravagant gifts on her birthday, and she doted on Elena too much for Elena to show up with a cheap, nondescript gift.
Amelia nodded. “Don’t worry, I’ve taken care of it for you.”
“Thanks, Mom,” Elena said sweetly with a smile on her face.
“Have the Milers called you recently?” Amelia asked. It was odd that the Millers hadn’t called Elena in the last few days, especially after she had returned from their place. In the past, they couldn’t go days without speaking to her.
Elena realized Amelia was right and said, “I’ll visit Grandma Athena later.”
She was used to referring to Athena with such affection. If one didn’t know better, one would have thought Athena was her grandmother. But in truth, it was because Elena had already assumed the mantle of Andrew’s wife.
Just as Elena was thinking about what to bring on her visit to the Miller residence, Easton called her.
Amelia’s expression darkened when she saw Easton’s name flashing on the screen. He was the youngest child of the Miller family. He was
unaccomplished and unfavored by his elders. No parent in fine.
society would consider marrying their daughters off to a deadbeat like him.
“Your father put in a lot of work to cover up the rumors. You’ll have to do your part and explain yourself to Mrs. Miller Senior later. And stay away from Easton for your own good,” Amelia warned.
“I understand, Mom. Don’t worry,” Elena reassured. She felt the knots in her stomach loosening after Amelia spared her from admonishment.
Caleb had his hands full covering up the rumors and sorting out the crisis at the company. The scandal had been taken care of, but the Millers must have learned about it. It had to be why the Millers had stopped calling her.
Over at the Miller residence, Madelyn hoped that everything would go smoothly today. As a safety measure, she had Benson follow her everywhere.
She didn’t leave Easton alone with Athena. Wherever Athena went, she went as well.
Athena patted Madelyn’s hand and said, “I’m glad to see you work things out with Andrew. You both look so happy together.”
“It was my fault for not giving him a chance sooner,” Madelyn confessed.
“Then hurry up and start a family with him, Maddie! While I’m aware of his feelings for you, he’s already got everything a man could want, save for children,” Athena elaborated.
At the mention of children, Madelyn thought about the contraceptive pills Elena had sneaked into her food. A shadowy look flickered in her eyes. She would make Elena pay for doing that.
Even as the savage thought crossed her mind, Madelyn nodded and said sweetly, “Don’t worry, Grandma. Andrew and I will start a family in no time. Soon, there’ll be a baby in the family for you to pamper!”
“Attagirl.” Athena was so pleased by Madelyn’s reassurance that she grinned from ear to ear.
Meanwhile, Elena dared not answer Easton’s call in front of Amelia even if Amelia had not admonished her earlier. As such, when she arrived at the Miller residence, Easton dragged her to a remote corner and pinned her against the wall.
“What are you doing?” she demanded, the pain shooting up her back bringing tears to her eyes.
Easton glowered at her. “You told me Aunt Grace and Great–Grandma hated Madelyn! So what the hell is going on?”
“What are you talking about?” Elena was bewildered.
When Easton saw the dumbfounded look on her face, coupled with her cluelessness, his temper flared. He snapped, “Great–Grandma intends to give Madelyn half of her shares in the company!”
Elena’s eyes nearly bugged out of her head. “What?”
She stared at Easton in disbelief, wondering how this could have happened. She had been so sure that Grace and Athena hated
Madelyn’s guts. In all the years Madelyn and Andrew were married, neither of them had warmed up to her.
There was no way Athena would willingly give her shares to Madelyn!
