Chapter 0549
Chapter 0549
Although she didn’t wish to admit it, Candice really didn’t want Hanley to appear now.
She also didn’t know why. All she felt was that her mind was a mess and couldn’t make sense of anything.
Seeing that the atmosphere in the ward was stiff, Yana blinked and said, "While you’re injured these couple of days, I’ll come over to help you watch over Baby Mulberry. Coincidentally, I'm not too busy these days."
Candice nodded. Before she could speak, a glass of water was passed to her.
Hanley said, "You're still running a fever. Drink more water. I'll leave on tomorrow morning's flight. I have to go back to the hotel to handle some things. It's good to see you're okay." He said it calmly, as if it were nothing.
Candice hesitated for a moment, took the glass of water, and then said, "Sorry, it seems like I've troubled you again."
Yana watched their interaction clearly from the side, but she also knew that some things were better left unsaid.
Hanley didn’t stay long and soon left. Yana followed him out and said, "Didn't you say you were going to see your mother next week? Why are you leaving tomorrow?"
Hanley replied, "She's uneasy with me around."
Hanley was a perceptive person, of course he would notice Candice’s emotional changes. But he didn’t want to make it difficult for her, let alone let her suppress things in her heart while she was sick like this.
He stopped and looked far into the deep corner of the hospital corridor. His ink-like eyes filled with reluctance and regret.
But in the end, he didn’t say anything, just turned and left.
Yana watched Hanley leave with a hint of regret, but she didn’t say anything to Candice.
After all, she had her own mess to deal with, and matters of the heart were something only the parties involved truly understood. No amount of talk from others could change that.

Alex had a fever that night, and the doctor said it was a mild infection. After taking medicine, he was fine the next day.
But as a safety precaution, he stayed in the ICU for two more days before being transferred to a regular ward.
Now Yana couldn’t say anything cynical anymore. She just kept cursing Oscar. "Such people should really get their retribution. Haven't they heard that every wrong has a remedy and every debt has its debtor?"
Sieg asked with a cold tone, "That's well said. Since you believe in karma, why didn't you seek justice from Susan? Instead, you were bullied into resigning from the company. Yana, you really are "outstanding"."
Sieg was usually carefree and barely reliable at critical moments. Lately, however, he had been running around for Alex a lot.
Yana had originally come to keep Candice company, but she and Sieg kept bumping into each other. However, these two were just not compatible. Every time they met, they had to exchange a
few sarcastic remarks before they could call it quits.
But Candice didn’t know that Yana had actually resigned from the company. She asked Yana, "Weren't you doing well at your dad's company?"
Yana pursed her lips. "Don't listen to Sieg's nonsense. I just wanted to try starting my own business. It's boring to stay at my dad's company every day."
Candice wanted to ask more, but seeing that Yana obviously did not want to continue this topic, she paused and said, "It's up to you to decide."
Yana said, "Speaking of which, I also plan to recruit you to work at my company. I'm planning to focus on medical beauty treatments, and it seems like the trend is quite good now."
She was serious. Beside her, Sieg immediately mocked her. "Don't you even know how to do market research for your start-up? Are medical beauty treatments even still a niche market? This trend is already a Grand Canyon."
Yana glared at him, just as a nurse came out of the ward, gave a few instructions about visiting patients, and then left.
Candice didn’t say anything more. Yana hesitated for a moment, pushed open the ward door, and walked in.
She was also wearing a patient gown, with the wound on her wrist still not healed, still wrapped in gauze.
But Alex's situation was obviously worse.
His back was badly injured and he dared not lie down, so he could only sit, with a drip on his wrist.
He had lost weight in the past few days, his features more defined, with his eyes lowered, looking unapproachable.
Candice could not help but soften her movements. Seeing Alex like this, she actually felt a little uncomfortable, but she didn’t know what to say.
She stood by the doorway, not approaching.
Alex heard the movement and lifted his eyes. His dark eyes were calm at first, but after seeing the person in front of him clearly, they began to soften.
Candice was slightly stunned by his gaze. She reacted and asked, "Are you... feeling any discomfort?"
She actually wanted to ask if Alex's wound was still hurting, but she felt that asking this was too intimate and strange.
Alex's gaze stopped on her wrist and he replied with a question. "What about you? I heard you had a fever."
Candice pursed her lips and said nothing. She felt a bit awkward and uncomfortable seeing Alex like this. She walked over to pour him a glass of water, then remembered to ask. "Do you want some water?"
Alex did not speak. He just stared at Candice.
It was not until Candice's hand holding the cup tightened slightly that she whispered, "Forget it if you don't want it." She was about to put the cup back after she spoke.
However, her arm was suddenly grasped. Alex's gaze was gentle as he held Candice's hand, not exerting much force, but rather being cautious. "What I said on the rooftop that day was all sincere.
As long as you're safe, I'll agree to any conditions.
"I used to think that nothing could compare to Aether in my heart. I also had the same despicable selfishness as Daniel."
Alex held Candice. He had thought a lot in the ICU these past two days, such as what would have happened if he had not grabbed Candice in the end and she had really fallen from the rooftop.
Just thinking about that scene made Alex feel like his heart was about to shatter. Even though it was just a hypothetical scenario, he could not forgive himself.
And the only thing he regretted was not finding Candice earlier, so she wouldn’t have been so frightened alone.
During those two days, Alex could almost see Candice standing on the edge of the rooftop whenever he closed his eyes. Then he would be startled awake, needing to find a nurse to check and confirm multiple times that Candice was safe before he would feel relieved.
He slowly lowered his eyes, but he did not let go of Candice's hand. His voice trembled slightly. "But I was wrong. When you stood on the rooftop, I realized what is important... Cici, I really...really can't lose you."
As he spoke, Alex's head drooped lower, and he dared not look at Candice.
Alex had always been proud and self-assured, but now he bent over, burying his head particularly low, like an ostrich.
His shoulders trembled slightly, and from Candice's point of view, she could see the rim of his eyes were red.
Alex pressed his lips together tightly, his jawline tense, as if he were trying hard to contain something. Published by Nôv'elD/rama.Org.
Candice looked at Alex holding her forearm, her voice slow. "Alex."
