Not Your Doormat Anymore

Chapter 13

I stepped aside and said, "I'm not getting married anymore."

"What?" Nora stared at me, dumbfounded. "Are you kidding me, Dr. Ranford?"noveldrama

I shook my head. "She cheated on me, so we broke up. It's that simple."

Kourtney parted her lips slightly, looking at me in surprise.

"I'm sorry to hear that, Dr. Ranford." Nora shrunk slightly and continued, "I have something else to do, so I'll head out for now."

However, as soon as she stepped out, Casey walked in.

"Jace!" She was still in her wedding dress as she rushed over with her hem lifted. Her hair was disheveled from all the running, and sweat beaded on her forehead.

"Today's our wedding day. You can't do this to me!" Casey said, sounding aggrieved as tears filled her eyes.

I scoffed. "How could you even say that, Casey? Shouldn't you know best how you've been treating me?"

Casey bit on her lip and replied, "It's because you never stayed with me. You were always at the hospital, and that's why I—"

I said, "Stop with your excuses, Casey. Don't you love Andrew? I'm giving the both of you a chance now. Now that we're no longer together, you should go marry someone you truly love."

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Kourtney huddled under the blanket, trying to stay out of sight.

My heart softened. "We're at a hospital, so don't cause a scene. You should just leave."

Casey's eyes widened when she noticed Kourtney. "It's her! Is it because of her that you're not marrying me?"

"You... You've misunderstood. I'm merely Dr. Ranford's patient," Kourtney mustered her courage and said.

But before she could finish her sentence, Casey rushed over, about to hit her. I hurriedly stopped her, my gaze turning cold. "Are you done causing a scene here? This is a hospital!"

"She-"

"Leave!" I had never looked at Casey like that before. She froze for a moment before releasing her grip and left in dismay.

I turned around, looked at Kourtney, and sighed. "I'm sorry to have disturbed you."

"You didn't, Dr. Ranford. You're a good person. It's not your fault she couldn't appreciate you." Although she just got shouted at, she wasn't at all angry. Instead, she even offered me some comfort.

I felt somewhat embarrassed and quickly came up with an excuse to leave.

...

The hospital had been particularly busy for the past few days. I had worked three consecutive shifts without going home.

For some reason, I hadn't gone to visit Kourtney. She was too pure, and she had endured too much pain because of me. I couldn't bring myself to visit her.

It was my day off today. I was about to head back to my apartment when I received a call from my parents.

Mom said, "The Newtons have been camping out in front of our house for the past few days, trying to get in. Your dad and I have tried sending them away but to no avail, and now we can't even go out. Why don't you come back and sort it out with them? Just ask them not to come anymore."

She continued in a worried tone, "They're even blocking your dad on his way to the company. It's getting annoying, and his temper hasn't been too good for the past few days."

"I'll head over now." My expression hardened after hearing what Mom said.

I couldn't believe the Newton family still had the nerve to go harass my parents at

my house, even after what happened at the wedding.

I made a call and immediately drove home.

From a distance, I could see Brandon, Gina, and Casey. The three of them stood

in front of my house like stubborn leeches, even knocking on the door

occasionally. No wonder my parents couldn't take it anymore.

I walked out of the car with a cold expression. As soon as they heard me, they rushed over eagerly.

"You're finally back, Jace! Get on your knees, Casey!" Brandon scolded.

Casey slowly went down on her knees with her head hung low. "I'm sorry, Jace. Everything that happened before was all my fault. I owe you an apology-please forgive me."

Her complexion looked pale, and she hadn't even put on any makeup, looking extremely disheveled.

If this was before, I wouldn't have bear seeing her like this. But now, I merely averted my gaze. "I've

already made things clear on then et

wedding day. The engagement is off, and we no longer have ties with each other."

"Cass and you have been together for years-it's impossible for you to just end it like that. What happened that day was just a mistake. Please think through, Jace." Gina smiled awkwardly as she reached out to grab my hand.
