The Last Straw
Beta Jace’s POV
“I need to replace this fucking car ASAP! What a snail’s pace! Couldn’t it be faster, Gamma!” Irritated, I turn to Kenry behind the wheel. We’ve been on the road for five minutes and it seems that Human Town is getting further with every second.
I’m in a hurry and this man isn’t moving fast enough.All rights © NôvelDrama.Org.
And here I am, thinking my car was the fastest in the pack after Zane’s.
“We would have preferred to take the Heli. Unfortunately, this car is not an airplane, you’ll have to settle for this speed, Beta,” he notes. “I’m at the maximum that can take us safely into Human Town. Just a little while and we’ll end up in some hospital and then you will arrive much later than you thought.”
I know he’s right, but my wolf can’t handle the truth. Maybe I should have just run the distance with my wolf. My mate needs me, or rather say, we need each other to strengthen our wolves. We are exhausted from the long separation.
A smile breaks on my face when I think I’ll have her in my arms again in half an hour. All those nights alone, the dreams about her will be over. I can’t wait for that moment.
And then the first buildings come into view and I sigh relieved. My wolf starts howling with joy, I don’t know where he still got the energy to wag his tail with joy. Kenry skillfully maneuvers the car through the crowded streets and a few minutes later, we are in front of an apartment complex. I rush to get out, looking around impatiently at the slacking Kenry.
We enter the lobby and report to the receptionist. Luckily she can still remember Kenry. He inquires about his neighbor whom he had helped when she became unwell at her door.
“Ooohhh, but she left that same day. With the man who came to get her. I thought you knew,” replies the receptionist. “I didn’t see her after that. The penthouse is still empty.” At her words, I run into the elevator and go to the top floor. When I get there, I see two doors indeed. I look at them hesitantly and then try to pick up the scent of Saphira. But it’s been too long and the place has been disinfected more often.
Kenry is now standing next to me, showing me the door I need.
“She stayed here”. He takes a card from his pocket and swipes open the door. And I can now clearly perceive Saphira’s scent in the apartment. I run through the bedroom into the walk-in closet. It’s empty. Nothing to prove my mate once lived here. Like a zombie I walk back into the bedroom and fall on the bed.
This can’t be true! I’m late. She has indeed left.
Moon Goddess, what should I do now? I have no idea where to look for her anymore. Broken, I hide my head in my hands, distraught at the situation. The bed goes down, Kenry and Elise are sitting next to me.
“Jace, I’m so sorry for this. This is the worst thing your mate can do to you. I wish I could do something to bring her back,” Kenry tries to soothe me.
“No, no, no, she didn’t do anything. She’s just confused. When her mind clears up again, she will definitely come back to me. She can’t live without me, Kenry,” I reply sadly, wanting to believe my own words.
Elise puts a comforting hand on my shoulder.
“I feel for you, Jace. I wouldn’t know what to do if Cleo wasn’t with me. It’s like going around half dead,” she speaks out softly. “We have one more option, a small chance of finding her.”
My head shoots up and I look at her expectantly.
“Now that we know she’s with Alpha Glary, we can find out in her pack where he is. If we find him, we are on the right track”.
I think back to the last time I was in Silver Moon. Then I nearly knocked down their packhouse. Cleo and Zane were able to stop me. Now I’m in the company of Kenry and Elise, two opposites. While Kenry prepares to go to war with Silver Moon, Elise wants to keep the peace for Mercedes’ sake.
“We need to let Zane know we’re on our way. He’s still in the pack with Mercedes. We have to take our Luna into account, I want you to control yourself this time and handle the matter calmly”.
Kenry calls Zane and explains our plan. I can tell from his tone on the phone that he’s eager to keep me out of Silver Moon. He probably doesn’t want a repeat of the last time I was there. I take the phone from Kenry.
“Zane! Do not worry. I’m too weak to cause any drama. What I want is my mate, nothing more than that. We’ll be there in a few hours,” I let my Alpha know and give Kenry the phone back.
We leave the apartment complex to drive to a private airstrip. Kenry called in the Heli to get us, it’s much faster than the car. He stated that with the Heli, he doesn’t have to listen to my whining about the car’s speed all the time. When we arrived, we could already see the Heli approaching. A warrior came along to drive my car back to the pack.
When we’re in the air, I’ll fall exhausted in a chair. I’m whacked out, my wolf has given everything he had to keep us going to Silver Moon. Zane is there, as my Alpha, he’s able to transfer some of his energy to me. I notice Kenry is watching me with concern, he’s in the mind link, with Zane, I’m sure.
When we land minutes later, I see my Alpha waiting. The Heli is hardly at a complete standstill when he grabs me by the shoulders and pulls me against his shoulder. His wolf connects to mine and I feel a flow of energy enter my body. It’s like I’m a battery being charged. Kenry and Elise place a hand on each of my shoulders and the energy flow increases.
Goodness, this feels good. About five minutes later, I’m mostly the old one. Zane lets go to allow me to stand on my own feet again. I look at him gratefully.
“Thank you, guys. It’s been a tough few days for me.”
Zane nods and looks straight at me.
“Jace. I’m sorry, man. But Alpha Glary isn’t here anymore. According to the pack members, he left for training to another pack,” explains Zane. “Nobody knows where that pack is, only his parents. And I get nothing from them. Mercedes has also tried but they are silent as the grave”.
Another setback.
I bow my head to process the disappointment. This was our last straw.
Saphira!
“But I know where that pack is”, it suddenly sounds confident from a distance. And I recognize one of Mercedes’s friends walking toward us….
