The Billionaire's Mistake (Anya and Daniel)

MISTAKE 39

Chapter 39: Refusing Alimony

“There is a part of the prenuptial agreement that covers handing over her inheritance from my grandfather; how did this go?” Daniel asked. If nothing else, he could still pay her mother’s bills for a few more months.

“This will not be a problem; Miss Jones‘ lawyer said they will not contest anything. To make sure they don’t change their minds, I have already submitted the divorce agreement, and I am waiting for the certificate,” Mr. Kent replied.

Daniel raised a brow at this. He has submitted it already? Mr. Kent sure worked fast, but he was not sure how that made him feel.

“Then, let her know that I will offer a million in alimony,” Daniel told him.

“I will relay the message and get back to you,” Mr. Kent said.

Anya had only dropped the call when another came in. She recognized the number and picked it was her lawyer.

“Mr. Hanson, what can I do for you?” she answered.

“Your husband’s divorce lawyer called me to pass on a message,” he started to say when she cut his sentence off.

“Ex–husband,” she corrected him.

“I am sorry, Miss Jones,” he apologized. “Your ex–husband’s divorce lawyers called me to pass on a message. He has informed me that your husband has offered to add a million dollars to your alimony,” he said.

Anya felt nothing when she heard his words, she yes not interested in anything that had to do

with him again.

“Reject him, I do not need his charity. Tell then that I want nothing from him first have the divorce settled quickly,” she said.

“Are you sure, Miss Jones? You have been married to him for more than three years, you most

definitely deserve that money, if not more,” he said.

“I want nothing from him. Don’t get distracted. Mr. Hanson. He is a very dangerous man. It is best I leave quietly.”

“Alright then, I will relay the message. Do not worry, come on, I will have the divorce settled quickly,” he promised. When their call ended, Anya found herself staring into space too long It took a while for her to recover and still her heart.

Anya may not have lived long in a rich society, but she had come to understand them quite well. What she took from him will definitely come back to hunt her. If one wanted to break ties with people of his caliber and have nothing to do with each other again, they would need to be willing to either take enough to protect themselves or leave empty–handed.

Daniel waited a while before Mr. Kent replied. When he heard Anya’s reply, it bothered him. Anya was refusing everything? He rolled around in bed for hours all night, unable to get some

sleep.

His mind wandered to Anya every other second. It was as though he had lost his mind. When she was at home, he barely gave her much of a thought, and the moment he got rid of her, he could not sleep.

Even if he rolled for hours, sleep still deluded him. They say that the god of sleep forgets those who bow to thoughts. It took one night for Daniel’s curse to begin.

While a night turned to days as sleep was hard to find for Daniel, Anya had woken up and met

with the real estate agent the next morning. This house was old and crumbling, but when the agent took her around to see the house, all she felt was nostalgia.

Anya recalled this courtyard. The orange tree and plum tree at the center of the courtyard had grown taller than she had remembered.

“As you can see, the trees will be a problem. There are two more in the back and one in front. Their roots have not damaged the foundation, but the roof and walls will need a lot of work,”

the real estate agent said.

This was the point when clients would refuse to take the house. Many were attracted to the location of the house, but when they saw the state of it and heard the price, they left.

“Hove it. I will take it,” Anya said, and the agent almost jumped out of his skin in excitement. As though worried that Anya would change her mind, he hurriedly finished the procedures of the purchase. The moment the house was hers, Anya met with a renovation company and drew

out plans.

She looked at the money in her bank account. After repaying her debt to Dr. Steele and buying the house, she still had some money left from her last project.

In a week, her plans were starting to take shape as the renovation soon began.

A week had passed, and Daniel had thrown himself into work from the lack of sleep. Selene was sick, so he still had to make the drive over to see her.

His secretary had taken over keeping track of private life with his family, so he was not shocked when he got up one morning to notification that he has a birthday to attend, his father’s birthday. He tiredly dressed and drove over with a gift he had prepared a day before. He lived about an hour from his parent’s home, so it did not take him long to arrive.

Daniel stepped into his father’s cozy home and was greeted by the familiar scene of his mother shuffling about arranging things. His aunts tried to help her, but she moved like the

wind, leaving them behind. The large dining room was packed with family trying to find their

seats.

There was a loud back feeling in the air. However, Daniel’s heart felt heavy as he entered the dining room alone, his wife, Anya, conspicuously absent.

“Where’s Anya?” Wendy asked, her gentle eyes scanning the room expectantly, looking behind Daniel, who was making his way over to sit beside his brother. He had not told them yet about Anya and could already predict how the conversation would take place. Original content from NôvelDrama.Org.

After Anya left that day, his mother had given him some scolding. She was completely disappointed in him for not taking Anya’s side.

Daniel took his seat at the table, taking a deep breath before answering. “She’s not coming,” he answered coldly.

“Why not?” his aunt asked, but before he could answer, his father, the celebrant, walked in dressed in an immaculate black suit. He was getting old, so it was a big day for his family.

James’s entrance distracted everyone. There were about fifteen people in the dining room between cousins, aunts, and uncles. It was easy for a person to drown out. Soon, the cake was cut, and presents started passing around.

Daniel had hoped to delay the question of Anya’s absence for as long as possible, but fate mocked him. Anya had been joining family activities these days. Her absence was glaring. It did not take long for the question of where Anya was to come up in conversations.

“Why do you look so tired?” Daniel’s cousin Miley asked, drawing attention to his sleep- deprived eyes. He had made sure to place some ice under his eyes to cover up the dark circles,, but it was still ineffective.

“Work,” he answered simply.

“Where is Anya?” she asked, and he rubbed his temple, feeling a headache coming. Miley did

not like Anya, so why was she asking?

“He said she was not coming. What happened?” His aunt asked.

“Is Anya sick?” Daniel heard his mother ask. He felt at this moment, he might as well tell them. He was not sure why he had never told them all this while. Every time the thought strolled into his mind like a persistent ghost, he suppressed it faster than a priest at an

exorcism.

“We got divorced,” he said, and the storm he expected did not descend as silence hunted the

room.
