Chapter 411 Impending Divorce
There was quite a crowd outside the courthouse, a dense throng of people.
Emily couldn't help but think of them as soon-to-be-divorced couples, judging by their sour expressions and the way they glared at each other like they were about to settle a debt.
In contrast, she and Michael seemed much calmer.
Michael sat quietly beside her, so silent she could hear his breathing-steady and rhythmic.
Maybe sensing the tension in the car, or seeing the scene outside, the driver parked without a word, hunching his shoulders and watching the two of them through the rearview mirror.
Emily let out a long sigh, her gaze dropping slightly before she looked over at Michael. "Let's go." Emily said suddenly, then got out of the car on her own.
Michael never liked being the passive one.
Even though he only had a sister and no one to compete with him for the Smith Corporation inheritance, there were plenty of people in Emerald City eyeing the Smith Corporation and the Smith family, not to mention the lurking criminal elements.
Having lost his father at a young age, Michael knew he was the only pillar of the Smith family now.
For years, he had selflessly devoted himself to learning how to manage the Smith Corporation, even taking time to train the family staff, keeping everything in order.
He had grown to love this sense of control, so when he fell in love with Emily, he wanted to help her with everything, allowing her to enjoy life and comfortably sit as Mrs. Smith of the Smith Corporation.
But now?
Why did Emily always want to break free from him, from his care?
They had a child together; why couldn't they reconcile and move past the past?
The car window slammed shut.
Seeing Emily walk away without looking back, Michael's heart sank.
After a few minutes, he got out of the car, feeling like he had transformed from a proud lion to a dejected stray dog in an instant.
Emily didn't want him anymore.
This was a fact Michael had to face.
The two walked one behind the other through the crowd of other soon-to-be- separated couples. Emily took the lead, actively queuing up and then sitting in the waiting area, looking around.
From her every small movement, Michael could see her desire.
She was eager to leave him, to end their marriage, to shed the identity of Mrs. Smith. Michael began to regret agreeing to the divorce in a fit of anger yesterday.
Now he wanted to speak up and ask her to stay, but his stubborn pride held him back, making it impossible for him to soften and lower his head.
Time ticked by, and soon it was their turn.
Emily was the first to sit down in front of the clerk, taking out all her documents, including the long-sealed Marriage Certificate, which she had once treasured the most.
"Are you sure about this?" the clerk asked routinely, her face expressionless.

But she glanced at the man beside Emily and frowned, asking again. "If you're not, you go to the mediation room and talk to a counselor. Marriage isn't easy these days; you should cherish it."
The two of them stood still like statues, just staring at her.
The clerk stopped talking and began checking their documents one by one.
"You don't have any kids?" she asked.
Emily's eyelashes fluttered slightly. She was about to say no, but Michael spoke up first. "We do."
The clerk looked up, glancing between Michael and Emily.
Suddenly, she seemed to realize something, her mouth opening in surprise as she asked Emily. "You're pregnant and getting a divorce? And you're leaving with nothing? Are you crazy? Why?"
Though the clerk's questions were a bit intrusive, she was a woman herself and couldn't help but try to persuade them, seeing the unfair divorce terms.
Emily's eyelashes trembled again. She looked up at the clerk, forcing a smile. "We don't get along, and I have my own money."
Emily's determination to divorce was clear. The clerk, seeing this, decided not to interfere further, but then Michael spoke again, "The house at Emerald Lake Manor, I promised it to you. I won't go back on my word."
Emily quickly responded, "That house is filled with memories of you and other women. What would I do with it? Let your son live there? Or have him grow up and start his own family in that house?"
Michael frowned, anger rising. "Emily, what are you saying?"
Emily continued her attack. "What? Am I wrong?"
Michael calmed down for a few seconds, then slowly gave in. "I'll get you a new house.
You can't just leave with our child and have nowhere to live."
Emily started to laugh coldly. "Thanks, but no thanks. I don't want any favors."

Michael was confused. "It's a house for our child. How is that a favor to you?
"Emily, I've agreed to the divorce. Why are you still being so unreasonable? Are you really planning to take our child and disappear, so I'll never see him again? If that's the case, we might as well not get divorced!"
The clerk, watching the drama unfold, didn't notice Emily's eyes turning red, her emotions starting to crumble, especially with Michael's sudden change of heart.
Emily couldn't accept Michael's last-minute reversal.noveldrama
She had been looking forward to this day for so long. She just wanted her freedom, a beautiful future for her and her child. She couldn't let Michael ruin it.
More importantly, Emily would never let her child live the life she had.
"Michael!" Emily slammed her hand on the table, tears streaming down her face.
Her whole body trembled, her cheeks flushed, and she stood there, pregnant and helpless.
The clerk quickly got up to support Emily. "You're pregnant, don't cry!" Hearing this, Michael also snapped out of it, pulling Emily back gently. "Sit down."
But Emily stood her ground, seemingly using her own body to threaten Michael. "Are we getting divorced or not?"
What would happen if they divorced?
What if they didn't?
The onlookers were all there to see the drama. Michael never expected Emily to go to
such lengths to divorce him.
What do you think?
