The Day Our Promise Breaks

Chapter 401

After Dahlia snagged the locket back, Josephine was barely hanging on. She

tucked the locket away and turned her attention to Josephine, planning to call for help only after she had passed. But then, out of nowhere, footsteps echoed from above. Someone was heading their way.

Dahlia quickly ditched her original plan, her expression shifting as she cried out for help, "Help! Is anyone there? Please, someone save her!" Her cries caught the attention of a passerby who rushed over, spurred by the urgency in her voice. As they approached, Dahlia broke down, tears streaming down her face, pleading, "Please, call someone to save her."

With Josephine rescued and Dahlia helped into a wheelchair (she'd gotten herself banged up too), they were wheeled into the hospital. There, they bumped into Charles, who was sneaking in to check on Josephine.

"Charles, you need to call Andrew. He should come and look at her. She just collapsed and took a tumble down the stairs. I tried to catch her, but I couldn't," Dahlia explained, her voice laced with urgency.

Following her gaze, Charles spotted Josephine. His expression shifted instantly, and he didn't waste a second before ringing Andrew. Luckily, Andrew lived nearby and dashed over as soon as he got the call.

Josephine was whisked away to the ER, and Dahlia was floored by what she overheard from Charles's call. "Is she Evelyn's mom?" she asked, stunned.

Charles didn't answer right away, instead, he fixed Dahlia with an inquisitive look, asking, "Dahlia, what are you doing here?"

Ignoring the undertone of his question, Dahlia replied without missing a beat, "Evelyn just can't let go of Charlie's death, and she's always coming after me."

"I don't want you stuck in the middle, Charles. Evelyn's got it in for me, and she won't talk or listen to reason."

"I'm worried if she keeps this up, things will spiral out of control. I thought maybe Ms. Josephine could talk some sense into her."

"I found out her mom was here, so I came to apologize to Ms. Josephine, hoping she could help with Evelyn..."

"But before I even had the chance to find Ms. Josephine, I saw someone faint and fall down the stairs..."

"Charles, Ms. Josephine can't get hurt, right? Evelyn's already torn up over losing Charlie. Ms. Josephine's her only family left. She can'tlose her too." Swnovel

Tears brimmed in Dahlia's eyes as she clutched at Charles's arm, visibly worried.

Charles studied Dahlia intently, his probing gaze unwavering.

Dahlia was notorious for her knack

for lying. Keeping a straight face while doing so was second nature to

her. No matter how intense

Charles's stare was, Dahlia held her ground, calm and composed.

After a long pause, Charles finally spoke in a low voice, "Dahlia, you shouldn't have come."

"Stay away from Evelyn and her mom from now on. I won't let Evelyn hurt you again."

"Charles, I just want to make peace with Evelyn... I..."

"Is that even possible?" Charles cut her off coldly.

...

"I'm sorry, Charles. I didn't think it through," Dahlia quickly apologized.

"You should head back," Charles instructed. He had already tried calling Evelyn, but she didn't pick up, so he texted her instead. Evelyn would be there soon, and seeing Dahlia would just stir up more trouble. sŵnovel

Just then, Andrew arrived. Charles, now focused on discussing Josephine's condition with Andrew, pushed thoughts of Dahlia aside.

When Evelyn finally showed up, she saw both Charles and Dahlia there. Dahlianoveldrama

was a mess, sitting in a wheelchair, her face streaked with tears.
