Chapter 457
All her careful plans crumbled to dust.
"Disappointed it isn't me?" a voice as cold as ice came from behind Dahlia.noveldrama
Recognizing Adam's voice, she nearly let slip, "Yeah, super disappointed!" But she caught herself just in time, biting her lip hard to stop her true feelings from spilling out. She took a deep breath, trying to keep her cool and maintain a neutral expression.
She noticed Charles was looking her way, prompted by her words. She couldn't let him suspect anything. If Charles started snooping around, he might uncover that she had orchestrated the accident.
Quickly, she plastered on a smile and turned to Adam, pretending to be sincere. "How could I possibly be disappointed?"
"I just got carried away with relief. This outcome is honestly the best. Sandy's okay, and neither you nor Evelyn will hold grudges."
Dahlia said this while making sure to glance at Evelyn.
"After all, I messed up with the whole kidney donor issue for Charlie. If Evelyn resents me and wishes Sandy wasn't doing well, I get it."
"You conniving snake, just zip it!"
Adam, fed up, kicked her wheelchair aside. He was afraid that if he heard another word, he might lose it and do something drastic.
"Adam!" Evelyn turned at the sound of his voice and rushed to him, seeing him still in his sterile gown. Her hands gripped his shoulders, eyes full of concern as she checked him over to make sure he was really okay.
"I'm fine," Adam reassured her, pulling Evelyn, who was still trembling, into his arms to calm her down. Once she was convinced Adam was alright, Evelyn quickly regained her composure.
"Adam, let's head back to the hospital." Evelyn took Adam's hand and led him away.
She couldn't bear another second around the three people left behind.
Charles watched Evelyn walk away. She had hurt him deeply, and yet she didn't even spare him a glance before leaving, not a hint of concern. His heart felt heavy and drenched with sadness.
"Charles, you're bleeding a lot!
Doctor, come here and help Charles with his wounds," Dahlia noticed Charles eyes lingering on Evelyn and spoke up, tears brimming in her eyes. "How could Evelyn be so cruel toyou?"
Charles remained silent. Only after Evelyn disappeared from view did he finally look away.
Sandy was wheeled out of the operating room. The surgery had gone well. Still under the effects of anesthesia, she was unconscious as they moved her to a recovery room.
Charles sat by Sandy's bed, watching her peaceful face. Inside, there was a flicker of joy. He should've been happy with the successful surgery. Yet, he couldn't

Evelyn cooked Adam's favorite meals and brought them to the hospital. Adam appreciated the gesture, devouring everything.
Just as they finished eating, Adam's phone rang with a call from the police station. He picked up right away.
The officer handling the case was on the line. "We've got a break in the case. The suspect has confessed."
"Was it Dahlia?" Adam asked, putting the call on speaker.
Evelyn, overhearing, joined in the conversation. Initially, in her panic seeing Adam hurt, she thought it was Charles who had hit Adam on purpose for Sandy's sake. But once she calmed down and looked at the bigger picture, she and Adam both agreed that Dahlia was the more likely culprit.
