Chapter 1962
Chapter 1962 He Followed Her
But Magnus couldn't let this chance slip away. She was the first soul who'd shown him kindness. Hence, he began trailing after her, his weakened legs protesting every step.
At first, the girl remained oblivious. Only when she reached the dimly lit entrance of her apartment building did she finally notice Magnus had followed her all the way home.
She spun around, eyes wide with shock. “You followed me?" she demanded.
Magnus looked at her with desperate eyes. "Please," he begged, "just let me stay tonight."
The girl's fists tightened at her sides. "I told you. It's not happening!"
He looks so proper, but he's just another troublemaker. I never should have helped him.
Her voice turned sharp: "Leave right now or I'm calling the police!
Magnus's face paled at her threat. "Okay, okay, I'm going," he said hastily, his voice thin and shaky. "Please don't call them."
As he turned away, a sudden, searing pain exploded in his head. The world went black.
His body collapsed like a felled tree, skull cracking against the pavement. Dark blood began pooling beneath him.
The girl's breath caught in her throat as she saw him fall. Her pupils shrank to pinpoints. "Hey! Are you okay?"
She rushed to Magnus's side, her hands trembling as she assessed his injuries. The man's towering frame made it difficult - she struggled for several minutes just to help him sit up.
Her first thought was to take him to the hospital, but reality quickly set in. Her pockets were nearly empty, and hospital care would mean taking full financial responsibility for this stranger.
But what about my parents?
Yet leaving him here wasn't an option either. The night air grew sharper with each passing hour. He'd never survive until morning in this condition.
If he dies here and the police investigate... wouldn't I be held responsible?
After a long moment of hesitation, the woman hauled Magnus onto her back and trudged toward home.noveldrama
Luckily, years of physical labor had toughened her. Though his weight made her stagger, she gritted her teeth and pressed on.
"You're really heavy!" she muttered under her breath.
At last, they reached her apartment. With a grunt, she dumped Magnus onto the bed, still muttering complaints.
A faint groan escaped him.
"Are you awake?" she asked
sharply-but he fell silent again. Sighing, she grabbed gauze and disinfectant, then began cleaning his wounds.
But as she worked, her breath hitched. Magnus's body was a patchwork of bruises, some fresh, others fading to sickly yellows and purples.
"No wonder you looked half-dead," she murmured. "Who did you piss off?"
The next morning, around nine o'clock, Magnus slowly blinked his eyes open.
His first sight was a yellowed ceiling speckled with patches of mold. He turned his head with some effort,
taking in his surroundings-fou
close walls enclosing a space large enough to be called a room. The furnishings were sparse: just a bed, a table with two chairs, and a small refrigerator that hummed quietly.
Through the doorway, he could see a narrow balcony and a simple kitchenette that looked more like an afterthought.
Where am I? The slums?
Magnus had never seen such cramped living quarters before. The entire space was smaller than the marble bathroom he'd once owned.
As he rubbed his throbbing temples and tried to sit up, his head nearly collided
with the sloped ceiling. It turned out he was in a loft.
"Ouch!" he yelped in surprise and pain.
The sound brought the woman rushing from the bathroom, her hands still damp from washing clothes. She appeared on the balcony, eyebrows raised. "You're awake. How are you feeling? Everything all right?"
Magnus stared at the woman, blinking slowly as yesterday's events came back to
him.
"Is this your home?" he asked, his voice rough.
The woman gave a tight nod. "Yes. It's a rented loft. Problem?"
Magnus didn't mask the scorn in his gaze as he glanced at the sloped ceiling. "No wonder I hit my head."
Her lips thinned. Does this man even realize he's at my mercy?
What do you think?
