Chapter 226
Chapter 226
Gwendolyn’s eyes were red, her lips pressed tightly together.
If only, if only Howard were here!
At that moment, she yearned for Howard to be by her side, to rescue her from this dire strait. C0ntent © 2024 (N/ô)velDrama.Org.
But he was far away in the Capital.
“Strip those clothes off yourself and save some grief! I’ve got moves that’ll make you forget your name! The widows in town are practically lining up for a piece of me…”
He leered at Gwendolyn as if she were prey, his words laced with vile suggestions.
Fighting back nausea, Gwendolyn retorted, “If you’ve been stalking me for days, you should know I’m handy with a needle! How many silver needles do you think I’ve got on me? Touch me, and I’ll make you regret it!”
Her heart was pounding, but she had to put on a fierce front to intimidate Jack.
“Eat your punishment or drink the consequences! Once I get my hands on you, I’ll make sure…”
Crash!
The door flew open with a kick, shaking on its hinges.
Dressed in a suit with mud–caked shoes, Howard stood amid the flickering lightning, his silhouette as fierce as a warlord risen from hell.
Gwendolyn’s pupils shrank, and her breath caught. It was like a dream. She didn’t dare blink as she watched Howard enter and kick Jack with force without a word. It thundered in the small space.
Jack howled in pain, pleading for mercy.
But Howard was deaf to his cries, tossing aside his coat and rolling up his sleeves to continue the beating.
A crowd had gathered outside the small cottage, and even the town mayor had arrived, shouting, “Stop! He’s going to die!”
“What’s going on here? That man… looks like Mr. Chadwick from Summit Corp! Dr. Quigley’s husband!”
*Jack’s been up to no good again, got himself beaten to a pulp by someone’s husband.”
Gwendolyn reached out and grabbed Howard’s arm. “Stop, it’s not worth it.”
Howard ceased his assault, wiping the blood from his hands onto Jack’s clothes with a cold expression. He addressed the onlookers. “This man attempted burglary and murder. Please take him to the police station.”
Jack spat out a mouthful of blood, his voice weak in protest. “I didn’t…”
He just wanted to take a picture for two hundred grand.
The villagers nodded in agreement. “Jack’s always been trouble. It sounds like something he’d do!”
“I’ve seen him eyeing Dr. Quigley these past days. He must have been after money! He deserves jail time!”
“What a monstrous jerk! Bullying a poor doc who’s here to yelp. He had it coming!”
The town mayor took charge, having Jack tied up and sent to the police station, while the rest of the crowd dispersed, seeing the drama had concluded.
In the quiet and disheveled room, only Gwendolyn and Howard remained.
Trying to sound calm, Gwendolyn said, “I’ll ask the town mayor for another room for you.” After all that had happened, his sudden appearance left her unsure how to act around him.
“This room is fine,” Howard replied, setting the furniture upright again. “It’s late. Let’s not bother them. Got any water here?”
“I’ll fetch some for you.”
“Just tell me where, and I’ll go myself.”
“Out the door, take a left, and it’s straight ahead to the public washroom,” Gwendolyn said, her voice emotionless, distant.
Howard left and returned shortly after a brief wash.
Avoiding his gaze, Gwendolyn suggested, “Let’s sleep. I have to be up early for the clinic.”
“Okay.”
They lay side by side in silence, the pattern of the rain outside diminishing. Gwendolyn was wide awake, her mind racing with thoughts. Suddenly, Howard encircled her waist, pulling her close into his embrace.
