Chapter 227
Chapter 227
“Gwen, was there ever a moment you wished I would show up?” Howard’s voice was a gentle whisper in the dimness of the room.
Gwendolyn bit her lower lip, fighting back a sob that threatened to spill.
Yeah, she wanted Howard there. And just like that, he was before her, as if he’d stepped straight out of a fairy tale.
But she didn’t speak, feigning sleep instead.
Howard didn’t call her out on her poor act. He held her tighter. He could feel her trembling.
She was scared tonight.
Howard’s eyes were dark with concern. Something was off with that guy. He reached for his phone, intending to call Nathan, but the signal was nonexistent.
Frowning, he thought, “If Quentin doesn’t get that cell tower fixed by tomorrow, I’m giving him the boot.”
Dawn broke.
Gwendolyn opened her eyes to the warm presence at her back. Howard’s arms were still around her waist. She gently wriggled free from his grasp and slid out of bed.
Behind her, Howard asked lazily, “Why not sleep in a bit?”
Gwendolyn paused, then turned to see Howard with his shirt unbuttoned and averted her gaze.
“I’ve got a busy day at the clinic.”
Propping himself up on his elbows, Howard looked at her. “About last night…”
“Thanks for last night,” she said, her pride surfacing again, “but I would have handled him, even without you.”
As if saying that could distance them from each other.
A ripple of amusement passed through Howard’s eyes. “Oh, did you finish him off? I wasn’t aware you had such skills.”
Gwendolyn opened her mouth but found no words.
After a moment, she tried to dismiss him. “Mr. Chadwick, Honeysuckle Hollow isn’t quite up to your standards. You’d better head back to Bayridge City. I can’t play hostess right now.”
Her tone was icy, unyielding.
Howard reached out and caught her hand. “I’ll leave with you guys tomorrow after the clinic wraps up.”
The free clinic treatment would end soon.
“Whatever you like. I’m going to work,” Gwendolyn said lightly, feeling aggrieved. NôvelDrama.Org owns all content.
For some things, wouldn’t he tell her without her asking?
What was he doing there in Honeysuckle Hollow? Did he have some sixth sense, knowing she’d be in trouble the night before?
“Gwendolyn.” Howard’s voice was deep and soft.
sentence me without at least telling me the crime. I can’t read your mind.”
He wanted to hear her admit to being jealous, to caring about him.
Gwendolyn’s grip tightened and then released as if coming to a decision.
“Mr. Chadwick, there are rumors online about you and…” Her words were cut off.
From outside, an urgent voice called out, “Dr. Quigley, we’ve got an emergency It’s critical!”
At hearing the sound, Gwendolyn’s face became serious and she swiftly exited the room. Just as she crossed the doorway, she almost ran into Quentin who was carrying a bunch of bags.
She gave him a brief nod and dashed off.
When left behind, Howard’s gaze darkened. Quentin spoke up. “Mr. Chadwick, these are the everyday clothes we’ve prepared for you.”
“And the cell tower?”
Quentin, tense, replied, “The crew is on it. Following your instructions, we’re installing a base station every kilometer. It should be done today.”
Since returning from the Capital, Howard seemed increasingly dissatisfied with Quentin, who was walking on eggshells.
Quentin handed over a document. “Here’s the police report. Jack took a bribe of twenty grand to snap some scandalous shots of Mrs. Chadwick for someone behind the scenes.”
“The police are close to identifying the puppet master and their motives. We should have answers soon.”
