Chapter 950
"He's our mentor, Grant. Once a mentor, always like family. How can you treat him like this?" Chloe asked, her voice tinged with desperation.
Grant remained unfazed. "Have you forgotten how he treated us back then? The deceit, the scams-we went through a lot because of him."
"Sure, he might be a bit greedy and not always the most honest, but when it came to the big stuff, he never let us down. Grant, you can't keep tormenting him."noveldrama
Chloe's eyes were red, tears slipping unchecked down her cheeks. "He's just an old man now, Grant. What did he do to deserve this?"
Grant's gaze fixed on the tears at the corner of her eyes, his brow furrowing slightly. After a pause, he finally spoke. "Come outside with me."
"Let him go," Chloe pleaded.
"I can't do that, but I promise you I won't torment him anymore."
Chloe knew there had to be a tangled web of reasons behind this. Grant wouldn't simply release him because of her pleas. But agreeing to stop the torment was the biggest concession he could offer. She also had no clue what price she would have to pay for it.
Grant turned and walked out, with Chloe trailing behind. As she climbed the steps, she glanced back to see the iron cage being lifted from the watery dungeon.
Finally, she breathed a small sigh of relief and continued up, each step feeling heavier in her heart. Once outside, she cut right to the chase. "Grant, who are you really? Why are you doing this? What grudge do you have against our mentor?"
"And what's your connection to Suzanne? Are you the one running Paradise Island?"
"Why all this secrecy? What's your real agenda?"
Chloe unleashed all the questions swirling in her mind. After everything, there was nothing left to hide between them.
Grant didn't answer directly but said, "I want to show you something."
He continued walking, with Chloe following closely. Eventually, he led her to the back of the estate, a place dotted with countless old graves. The tombstones were in disrepair, many half-buried in wild grass, nearly swallowed by the overgrowth.
The wind rustled through the grass, whispering like the voices of the souls beneath. It was midday, and the May Weather was pleasant.
sun was warm and gentle, yete
standing among those scattered tombstones felt like being at the edge of the underworld, achill in the air.
But Chloe wasn't scared. Grant must have brought her here for a reason-to uncover some secrets.
She approached the nearest tombstone, brushing aside the weeds. The broken stone was half-buried, the name almost worn away, but Chloe could still make it out "Steven's Grave."
She glanced at the other nearby tombstones. "Jonah's Grave, Rick's Grave, Brett's Grave, Hallie's Grave..."
Most of the tombstones bore the surname Grevenberg. Some had different surnames but were prefixed with Grevenberg, indicating they were women from the Grevenberg family.
Suddenly, Chloe remembered what her mentor had once said: "Your friend is a descendant of the Grevenberg family, burdened with an ancient grudge..."
In that moment, things started clicking into place for Chloe.
