Chloe scanned the dimly lit room, her eyes finally landing on a cage in the center. Inside, an elderly man lay comfortably, reciting poetry and sipping whiskey, seemingly unfazed by his confinement. Suddenly, Chloe shouted, "Master!"

The old man jolted upright at the sound of her voice, his gaze locking onto Chloe as she sprinted towards him. But the cage was suspended over a deep, water- filled pit and was gradually descending. The bottom was already skimming the water's surface.

Chloe quickly realized the cage was bound by chains, pulling it steadily downward. Her master was soaked, evidently submerged multiple times. She had heard of this water torture-a punishment from ancient times for the most notorious criminals. Victims were repeatedly dunked underwater until near- drowning or unconsciousness, then pulled back up, teetering on the brink of death.

Though she'd only read about such cruelty in old tales, seeing it in person was shocking. What shook her more was that her master was the one enduring it. She wanted to reach him, but there were no bridges or pathways across the water.

The old man recognized her immediately. "My dear girl, how did you end up here?" he asked, his concern more for Chloe than himself. "Get out of here, as far as you can. Go upstairs, and whatever you do, don't let your friend find out you were in the basement."noveldrama

Nemo, aware that Chloe was alone, felt a twinge of worry. He knew Grant seemed ruthless, but he wouldn't harm Chloe. However, if Chloe uncovered his secrets, things could turn dangerous. Nemo couldn't fathom why Chloe had appeared here. The simplest explanation was that Grant had brought her; otherwise, the alarm would've sounded. Since it hadn't, Chloe likely stumbled into the basement by accident.

Chloe was too frantic to process this. "Master, how did you end up here?" she cried. The cage continued its descent, a third of it now submerged. Her master's knees were already in the water. Chloe grew more desperate, her only thought to rescue him.

She examined the mechanisms

nearby. Her master had once taught them all sorts of peculiar things, including traps and secret passages. Chloe had always been captivated by tales of ancient tombs with their intricate traps. What she once thought were mere stories were now stark reality. Yet, she couldn't find the controls.

Nemo, however, remained calm. "Chloe, go back upstairs. If your friend learns you've seen me, you'll be in danger. Just act normal, forget everything you saw tonight. Focus on safely having your baby first."

Nemo had no intention of dragging Chloe into Grant's secrets; involving her had no benefit. Finally, Chloe found a button. Without hesitation, she pressed it. A bridge suddenly rose from the water, leading directly to the cage where Nemo was trapped. Chloe rushed over eagerly. Yet, even as she reached Nemo, the cage continued its slow descent.
